The British Car Week thing got me thinking.

Not to set off a bomb here, but how British are our cars?  They are owned, and have been designed by BMW, fer crisakes.  Sure, they're put together in England, but Hondas are put together here, and we still call them Japanese, not American.

What do you guys think?

If this topic has previously been discussed ad nauseum, I apologize.

I'll with hold judgement to see what the MG clubs do with the new Chinese MGs. Wink

I'll with hold judgement to see what the MG clubs do with the new Chinese MGs. Wink

So, MG is now owned by a Chinese company, Nanjing Automobile.  They may produce some of the cars in England.  These cars were designed while the company was part of the Rover group (MG Rover).  Nanjing also bought Rover's powertrain subsidiary, so the engines of the Chinese-MG cars will be from the owned-in-England era, as well.*

This is different from the MINI situation, where a foreign company essentially bought the name and intellectual rights of a brand, and completely redesigned the car (although said car holds to the spirit of the original) that would bear the name.

My take on this is that MGs, while now owned by the Chinese, are British-designed cars that will be built in China and/or England.  MINI is a German-owned car with an English 'heritage' that are being produced (for the most part) in England.

Points?  Counterpoints?

Sure BMW designed the MINI, but I think I saw somewhere on the window sticker or someplace that 60% of the parts are from Germany, and another percentage comes from the UK, and from North America or something. I see it as just a parent company. I hate when people call them BMW's, there not in any way. It's like being related through marriage.  I'm furious!

actually the 2002-2006 mini was originally designed by rover before the bmw buy out , bmw did some small tweaks
they are assembled in england and a good amount of the parts are made there

the 07 is a bmw design

Okay, so they (the R50/53 series) are (a lot) more British than I had thought.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the MG, but yes a different story than the Austin/Leyland?BMC/Rover Mini/MINI (in whatever order is correct).

BTW - isn't the 02-06 engine from Brazil?

The R56 "Prince" engine is made of components made in France, but assembled in BMW plant Hams Hall UK. Hmmm. Reminds me of another Anglo-French collaboration:

PSA
PSA is Peugeot/Citroën

BMW's plan to develop and build engines with PSA/Peugeot-Citroen will eventually end BMW's engine joint venture with DaimlerChrysler in Brazil. The new alliance will produce a family of gasoline engines for Peugeot and Citroen models and for BMW's Mini

PSA also makes parts for fiat
