I have seen a Mini Cabriolet for sale. They made these cars starting in 1993 as one of final versions of the Mini I. However this car is registered in the US as a 1974 Mini and has a VIN that would suggest this. I showed the pictures to the guy who runs the Mini Cabriolet site in the UK, and he's certain it's an original Cab. Did they import these cars into the US as earlier models to avoid smog etc? I can't figure this out, any thoughts welcome. Ben.

Probably a re-vin. They take an old VIN plate and put it on a newer car and magic it passes the 25 year old to import law.

If it is in the states and has a clean title then you are pretty much OK.

Hope this helps a bit.  Ask away...
