most of the people I have talked to go to pindar or martha clara, I knwo that we have done both of them so my thought would be to pick some that we have never been at.

Rob, last summer we spend a week of vacation in Greenport and visited about 9+ vineyards. One new one we visited and it looks like a Spanish castle, is named Raphaelle (not sure of the spelling?) not even listed on any brochures yet. It's past the Duck Walk Winery going east on right side. Next new one we visited was The Lenz winery, very nice. I counted 39 wineries on the brochure so there are platy to visit.
 Let's MOTOR!

and yes  i probably will not stop at waters crest.. gotta take a break once..

also,.. since most open at either 11 or 12.. gotta see a nice way to drive
which means i will try to leave airport maybe earlier than we have planned so we can actually have some driving in the am

This is a curiosity question for anyone who might know.

I just bought a vinifera wine from the Fingerlakes (Dr. Constantine Frank's) who was one of the pioneers of wine grape-growing on the East Coast.

Apparently, and I didn't know this, the phylloxera are known to eat the roots of the grape vine, making growing them on the East Coast (as per the documentary I watched) almost impossible.

How did they overcome this on the Island?  I know that Dr. Frank's wines are resilient, for some reason; I'm just curious if the same method is used on the Island's wineries.

Oh, and how far East on the Island do these wineries extend?

So many questions, thanks for the time.

most (not all) of the LI vineyards are on the north fork. for those not on long island who actually want to attend any ralley we do  (most of which i have run over the last 6 years)  we tend to start @ Airport Plaza in Farmingdale which is in the westernmost part of Suffolk county. The vineyards tend to be way out east on the north fork of the island.
well  the way we go out sometimes is a back road route...if late we shoot down 495 then zigzag out there.  i'ld like to try a different road along peconic bay this time  simply because we've not taken it before.  and try some smaller vineyards..(again  this is a LI club and i do try to be LI centric)

got back a little while ago..
left farmingdale @ 9:15.. got to Lenz @ 11 with some  odd roads and a minor detour into LI's rather sordid past  (I'm sure the village of Yaphank does NOT want to remember it...)

and roads that twist enough to either give someone fun or make them ill!!

went to Lenz, Raphael, Old Field, Sherwood House, Shinn Estate and Loughlin.. finished up at Momma Angelina's again.. (mmm yum)
had good wines mostly.. some i didnt like and so both the nice but upity tasting rooms and some of the warmest homiest ones you would ever want to go.
might be some other changes but i think the route there will stay..  which means we meet at 8:-8:30 at Airport Plaza and LEAVE (note the word.. LEAVE) at 9 AM  with the route we should arrive at Lenz/Raphael  (they are across from each other) @ 11 am.. others to follow

more info be posted as it becomes available

Rob - you know I mean no harm in saying this but...if it's LI centric then it shouldn't be the USMINI Club... Paul and I were talking about regionalizing the club in either club or forum format years ago  Chatter box

No worries mate.. I understand where you're coming from... carry on... I am getting into wines little by little, more and more.. are the LI wines any good?  Are they upscale?  Are they really expensive?  I think I'd be so drunk by the end of the rally I would have to spend the night at Paul's...  LOL ROTF

Rob-I almost did my thesis paper on that place in Yaphank.  A fellow names Marvin Miller wrote an excellent book called Wunderlich's Salute.  What time were you at Loughlin?  I was at the East Islip Library until 5PM.
